About

An interview from the 2015 PhotoPlus Expo in New York City with Michael Cassara of The Tiffen Company. Tiffen is a leading manufacturer of imaging accessories for the consumer & professional imaging and the motion picture and broadcast television industries. In this interview Michael talks with us about their new XLE Series Filter Line which include the APEX, the ADVANTIX & AXENT filters.

Designed with long exposure photography in mind, Tiffen’s three new 10-stop filters attenuate for the far red and IR wavelengths that commonly pollute long exposure images photographed on today’s modern camera sensors; the APEX, the ADVANTIX and the AXENT XLE filters are the ultimate imaging tools designed to control these issues on a wide range of sensors and lenses in various lighting environments

The Tiffen XLE Series APEX filter is designed for use on all DSLR, APS-C & Micro 4:3 sensors regardless of lens coating. Designed for extreme long exposures, the filter will allow you to blur any movement in the scene. The APEX is equipped with a standard near infrared blocker and a Tiffen Hot Mirror to eliminate all IR pollution that long exposure photography is susceptible to. These two features allow you to capture your long exposures without the risk of compromising the color in your image. If you require a heightened red response in your image, either manually reset your white balance or adjust in your post-production software.

The Tiffen XLE Series ADVANTIX filter is designed to be used on DSLR cameras in B&W or Color mode, plus APS-C sensors in these modes when used in combination with lenses approved for IR photography. Designed to take extreme long exposure photographs in manual set up, the ADVANTIX filter will allow you to blur any movement in your image. The intensity of this effect is achieved through adjustments in manual mode of aperture, shutter and ISO settings. Designed to remove the near IR polluting light waves that our AXENT filter allows through, the ADVANTIX removes these polluting light waves by introducing an active absorbing element. This element adds a slight greenish color cast to the filter, which can be adjusted for, either in your camera’s white balance settings or in your post software afterwards.

The Tiffen XLE Series AXENT filter is designed for full frame DSLR cameras when used primarily in B&W mode. It can also be used on FUJI’s X-Trans APS-C cameras (with interchangeable lenses) to obtain a highly stylized IR color effect when combined with lenses approved for IR photography. Designed to take extreme long exposure photographs in a manual set up, the AXENT filter will allow you to blur the movement in your image. The intensity of this effect is achieved by manually setting up your camera and is a combination of aperture, shutter and ISO settings. When your DSLR is set in color mode, the filter will allow through some IR light waves. The effect of IR absorption onto your sensor will depend on the lighting conditions and will gently to radically affect your image color. On DSLR cameras you may require fine-tuning of your color balance, or re-adjusting in post software. An extreme color cast similar to IR color photography can also be achieved on FUJI X-Trans APS-C sensor cameras.

Tiffen’s new screw-in sized ND Attenuators have been designed to offer a fine degree of neutral light control attenuation on wide-angle lenses. The smooth transition across the surface of the filter is designed to aid light control within your image area for a number of purposes, including maintaining a constant exposure range across your image when you have a bright sky.
