About
An interview from the 2015 Cine Gear LA Expo at Paramount Studios with Jessica Ellison of Westcott. Westcott markets a complete line of light control accessories for professional image makers. Since Westcott entered the photography market 76 years ago, it has become a major innovator in devising light control products. With the company’s expansion into the film/video markets, this long-standing commitment to innovation has continued. Westcott offers a wide range of products designed for the lighting professional. In this interview Jessica talks with us about their Flex LED Panels & Scrim Jim Cine.
The innovative Flex LED Mats, which are available in Daylight, Tungsten, and Bi-Color options, boast remarkably high color purity that produce an outstanding quality of light. With Color Rendering Index (CRI) ratings of 95+, these lights portray accurate shades and skin tones for faster post-production editing. The 1' x 1' Flex Bi-Color Mat features alternating rows of 3200K and 5600K LEDs. These remarkable diodes emit twice the brightness allowing the same light output as the 1-color Flex models. Its digital dimmer features an output dial and a color temperature dial to seamlessly adjust between daylight, tungsten, and in between.
The Scrim Jim Cine is a complete modular system designed to bounce, block, diffuse, subtract, and shape light. This system's durable, lightweight frames are designed to configure in sizes from 1'x 1' up to 8' x 8'. Frame pieces vary in size from 10" tubes and upward, giving filmmakers the ability to fit an entire scrim system into a carry-on or backpack. A variety of connection pieces create endless frame possibilities, allowing filmmakers to construct diffusion boxes, book lights, v-flats, floppy cutters, and more with ease. Each Scrim Jim Cine tube is constructed with anodized aluminum which ensures both durability and portability. Heavy-duty hook-and-loop tape is riveted to two sides of each tube, allowing for effortless mounting of fabrics and silks in tandem. Frames feature a built-in 3/8-16 thread for quick mounting. Reliable connectors are self-locking and ensure that frame configurations stay in place. Scrim Jim Cine tubes can be purchased separately or in complete frame kits. These frame kits are available in 8 size options and include all of the necessary connectors to construct each frame size.
To soften and diffuse any light source, Scrim Jim Cine fabrics are designed with the highest-quality silk and nylon fabrics that will not alter color temperature or skin tones. These simple-to-use diffusions systems are available in a range of sizes from 1' x 1' to 8' x 8' and in options ranging from 1/4 stop to 1-1/4 stop. These silks can be flown overhead to soften harsh sunlight or can be placed directly in front of your preferred light source to diffuse output.
Simultaneously direct and diffuse ambient and artificial lighting with 1/4-stop and 1/2-stop Scrim Jim Cine Grid Cloths. These innovative fabrics are perfect for large main light sources and when shooting in bright outdoor lighting.
Seamless Scrim Jim Cine nets are available in high-quality single and double versions in sizes ranging from 2' x 2' to 8' x 8'. These fabrics are essentials for run-and-gun and on-location sets, giving filmmakers the ability to cut busy or bright backgrounds by 1 or 2 stops.
Maximize ambient and artificial lighting with reflective Scrim Jim Cine Bounce Fabrics. These reflective fabrics project light evenly and are constructed with high-quality double-laminated materials. Silver bounce fabric adds bright, specular highlights with cooling tones while gold bounce fabrics add smooth, warming tones. Sunlight bounce fabrics are equal parts silver and gold, adding a slight warmth to subjects with specular highlights. The unbleached/black bounce adds soft, natural looking illumination to the scene and is reversible for use as a block or background.
