About

An interview from the 2015 Cine Gear LA Expo at Paramount Studios with Richard Schleuning of Carl Zeiss. Carl Zeiss is one of the oldest existing optics manufacturers in the world and is world renowned for their optical quality. In this interview Richard talks with us about their newly announced Batis line of E-Mount lenses,as well as additions to the Loxia family & Touit E & X-Mount lenses.

The new Zeiss Batis 25/2.0 and 85/1.8 lenses are the first full-frame autofocus lenses with an OLED display for the mirrorless Sony a series and therefore the pioneers of a new era. As professional tools, they enable outstanding outcomes with optimal image performance, impressive contrast and maximum resolution down to the very last detail. The innovative OLED display shows the distance of the focal plane from the camera system and the depth of fields, therefore ideally supporting creative image composition. For the demanding photographer, the OLED display is an absolute highlight – an innovation that is currently unparalleled in camera lenses.

These Carl Zeiss Batis lenses will be available in a wide-angle and portrait focal length and are the perfect match for the existing lenses offered for the system. The ZEISS Batis 25/2.0 and Batis 85/1.8 lenses will be available for purchase from July 2015.

With an angle of view of 99 degrees, the Zeiss Touit 12/2.8 wide-angle lens will soon become a firm favourite, particularly for landscapes and architectural photography. Its unique Zeiss T* multicoating guarantees maximum transmission and outstanding absorption of extraneous light. Just like a 50 mm lens in 35 mm photography, the Zeiss Touit 32/1.8 offers the same angle of view as the human eye. However, optimised for use with APS-C format sensors, it is simultaneously a lens that is so light and compact that it can be taken along simply anywhere and everywhere you go. The Zeiss Touit 50/2.8 will delight and inspire, It not only allows you to portray objects in their original size, but also provides for beautiful contrast between the pin sharp focus of the image and the softly sketched background thanks to its aperture of 2.8.

The Zeiss Loxia 35/2.0 and Loxia 50/2.0 lenses are the first members of a new family of manual focus lenses for the E-mount full frame. They are optimized for digital sensors and electronic viewfinders and feature a mechanical aperture setting and the mechanical deactivation of the click stop (de-click) for ambitious videography. The Loxia lens family has been specially optimized for digital sensors. The optical design of the Loxia 35/2.0 is based on a Biogon and consists of nine lens elements in six groups. With a full-frame focal length of a moderate wide angle, this lens is particularly well suited for nature, landscape and architectural photography. Its creative potential also comes to the fore thanks to its low minimum object distance of 0.3 meters, which allows close-ups with an unusual perspective.
