About
The 82nd Le Mans 24 Hours will be a huge challenge, namely: to achieve the same performances as in 2013 using 30 percent less fuel.
Thanks to the introduction of a new set of technical regulations, the greatest endurance race in the world is yet again fulfilling its role as a laboratory for technological innovation.
To explain this incredible technological advance to the general public the Automobile Club de l’Ouest has launched the production of 12 explanatory mini-films. They last between three and four minutes and each of the 12 episodes tackles an aspect of the new regulations, shows what’s at stake and how the manufacturers adapt their cars, explains the work of the suppliers or the role of the driver. The ninth episode is devoted to the engines, a determining element in the car's performance - and also the most secret! An engine must be reliable, powerful and robust. Since the very beginning the Le Mans 24 Hours have always been a real full-size technical laboratory for the manufacturers. The engineers can let their imagination run riot, especially with the new regulations. This is what had forged the renown and the richness of this event quite unlike any other in the world.
Fred and his film crew went to the Porsche motorsports department in Germany to get a better idea of the exceptional power unit designed by the Stuttgart manufacturer for its return to endurance, and to put into perspective those of its rivals, Audi and Toyota.
