About

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WOOD) - Other than movie critics, most people don't get paid to watch bad movies and comment on them. But Mike Nelson has been doing just that for the past 20 years.

Mike Nelson works for Rifftrax.com , a website that allows users to download audio commentaries you can play during a feature film. Nelson and others heckle and make fun of the film during the commentary.

Mike Nelson has made a career of making jokes about bad movies. Throughout the 1990s, Nelson was the head writer of the cult '90s TV series ' Mystery Science Theater 3000', which aired on Comedy Central and the Sci-Fi Channel. The show featured a man and his two robot friends trapped in outer space and forced to watch some of the worst movies ever made. He became the host of the show in the fall of 1993.

On August 17, Nelson, and his fellow 'Mystery Science Theater 3000' cast members Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett, will be commenting, or "riffing" as they call it, while watching the 1962 film "Jack the Giant Killer". The event, called 'Rifftrax Live', will be broadcast at movie theaters all over the United States live to audiences.

"This [movie] came up...and we screened it and thought 'Man, the fantasy aspect is kinda fun, but it's also kinda cheesy in a sorta serious kind of way, so it was perfect for us," Nelson said about picking "Jack the Giant Killer".

This is the 5th 'Rifftrax Live' event for the guys. Nelson says fans of Rifftrax keep asking for live performances, but he didn't want to hurt producing content for the website. He feels these events are a perfect mix to give the fans what they want.

"We get so many requests to do live shows and tour. So this works out well where we can reach out to people on one night," Nelson said.
