Kendall Eckman, Regional Manager of Blackmagic Design, Western North America shares why the Blackmagic Fusion is a must have for all industry professionals.
Who uses it?
Fusion 7 Studio is advanced compositing software for visual effects artists, broadcast and motion graphic designers and 3D animators. For more than 25 years Fusion has been used on thousands of feature film and television projects, such as “Maleficent,” “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For,” “The Hunger Games,” “Battlestar Galactica” and “Orphan Black.” However its reach is expanding beyond Hollywood visual effects artists as Fusion 7 is now available free of charge. Now everyone, from individual artists to the biggest studios, can create amazing visual effects and motion graphics.
What is the software?
Fusion 7 Studio is a visual effects and motion graphics software that features an infinite 3D workspace and node based workflow, which lets users quickly build unlimited effects. Features include 3D compositing, paint, rotoscope, retiming, stabilization, titling, a 3D particle generator, multiple keyers, including Primatte, optical flow tools for advanced retiming, stabilization and stereoscopic 3D production, support for third party OpenFX plug ins and distributed network rendering so users can render jobs on an unlimited number of computers at no additional cost. Fusion 7 Studio also lets users import and render 3D geometry and scenes from other applications as well as create their own elements from scratch.
Fusion 7 Studio also includes Generation, a studio wide multiuser management, workflow and collaboration tool. Creative teams can manage, track and review versions of every shot in a production, as well as assign tasks to artists, make notes and see each other’s workload. Fusion 7 Studio’s bin server lets everyone share and see common assets that are needed for the job, eliminating the need to copy and track multiple elements on different computers.
Fusion 7 Studio’s render engine allows users to distribute render jobs across an unlimited amount of networked computers, so users can render complex scenes and meet deadlines without sacrificing creativity or quality.
Why get it?
Fusion 7 Studio has a massive toolset that really lets users get as creative as possible. Whether users need to pull a key, track objects, retouch images, animate titles or create amazing particle effects, they have an amazing 3D workspace with tools for compositing, keying, painting, animation, stereoscopic 3D and more.
Fusion 7 Studio also greatly simplifies and streamlines the VFX process. Fusion 7 Studio uses nodes, which can be connected together to easily build up larger and more complex visual effects. Because nodes are easy to see, users can combine tools, images and objects in any order to create unlimited visual effects. Users can simply click on the node and make an adjustment, which is much faster than a timeline based tool because there are no confusing layers.
Again, Fusion 7 Studio’s Generation helps users manage and track versions of every shot in the studio, and its bin server lets everyone share and see common assets.
What projects has Fusion been used on?
“The Hunger Games” trilogy, “Thor,” “Edge of Tomorrow,” “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For,” “Captain America The Winter Solider,” “Noah,” “Hercules,” “Gravity,” “White House Down,” “Skyfall,” “Avatar,” “Hugo,” “Breaking Bad,” “Downton Abbey,” “Orphan Black” and “Battlestar Galactica.”
